This saved my bacon - now I use it all the time

Post by Michael Lester »

Tuning at a gig and could not find my tuning wrench in its normal storage slot.

We were playing at a saloon adjacent to a big box hardware store (Menards / Wisconsin).

Found this 3/16 long socket hanging in the wrench section. The black 'handle' is the hang tag with the label removed. It was under $4.

I hope this might help someone in the same fix.

Note to all: These will also keep your white tuners from getting dirty and nasty looking. I highly recommend these chrome plated sockets. You may have to fashion a knob or handle. Clean your dirty white, tuners (nylons)with comet cleanser and give away your aluminum tuning wrenches.
PS, buy a 5 mm one also. It is a few thousandths larger than 3/16". It's good for tuning nuts that were put on unthreaded and forced to expanded just a little. ;-) RP

I use a nutdriver which has it's own handle. They usually come in a set but individual sizes can be bought at Menards and other hardware stores or ordered from Amazon. The cheap sets work fine and are not much more than single sizes. Harbor Freight is a good source.
