OPEN G PEDAL STEEL, 6 STRING GBDGBD TUNING 2 PEDAL 2 KNEE

Post by Carl McLaughlin »

i HAVE A PEDAL STEEL Set up for open G tuning GBDGBD. The A pedal takes D to E , B pedal takes B to C ,Left knee G TO G#, Right Knee G TO F#.

I really need help. Anyone? Even how to play the scale up and down the neck using just the pedals.I can play some basic stuff, but always find i am playing most of my stuff in 2 frets using 2 pedal and no knee levers. Glad to pay someone to help me..

Carl

This is very similar to the standard e9 tuning. Think in intervals or scale degrees rather than notes and you have 1-3-5-1-3-5, which the same as standard e9 without the 9s and 7/flat 7. your pedals and levers do the same thing as the e9 equivalents.* I would just pick up some e9 learning materials and transpose everything to G major instead of E. I strongly recommend Jeff Newman’s up from the top series for learning the basic positions and harmonized scales up and down the neck. An added advantage of the open G is the ability to do hammer ons and pull offs in G major for the pentatonic.

*Press A you’ve got the 6 chord, Press AB you’ve got the 4 chord, lower you roots and press B and your got the 5 seventh. Go up two frets with A&B and your got the 5 chord.

I've played hi-bass G dobro and steel for a long time, and considered what pedals would be most useful. I'm not sure what I'd do, but I think I would look for changes that I could not already achieve by slants and behind-the-bar bends. You've got me thinking......

I set my 1st and 4th string lower 1/2 on RKL and lower my 2nd and 3rd strings a whole step on LKL for G major on my bottom neck of my GFI. Top neck standard Emmons E9th and it works well for what I play. 🙂
