Two More 7 String G Tunings,

Post by Allan Revich »

After playing around with FACEGBD (a G13 inversion; maybe Fmaj11), I found it less than intuitive when playing to jam tracks, or “joining” a band on YouTube. So I tried switching it up a bit…

G13 – G B D F A C E
and
G11 – G B D F A C D

The G13 is probably more versatile, but the high E is one note higher than my pay grade. G11 on the other hand gave me some really nice improvisation possibilities, and easy to grasp major and minor blues play-alongs. I’ll probably keep that one on at least one of my 7 string guitars.

EDIT: I quite like the G11 tuning after playing around with it some more. It kind of bugs me that I recognize that the G13 is “better” as having the ACE on top adds a lot more options, but realistically I think the G11 is about as wild and wide as my ability can manage.
Current Tunings:
GBDGBD (open G)
GBDEGBD (G6)

BTW, Dennis Montgomery stumbled onto your first tuning before either of us (just a different key and an extra string). Bob Lee made a page for it:

One 7 tuning I really like is a simple A Highbass Tuning with a reentrant b7 as a 7th string.
Low To Hi G A C# E A C# E
The G is a wholetone lower than the the 3rd string
That gives you a lot cool Dominant 7 sounds and keeps your A tuning intact, as far as I know that is similar to what Freddy Roullete
used on his 8 string guitars.
I use this tuning on one neck of my D8 stringmaster, the other one is C6.
That A 7th tuning would also work very well as a G 7th.

Thanks Sebastian. I’ve decided to try returning to a G6 tuning that I previously abandoned because the “6” in the middle kept getting in the way. I tried the standard 7 string G6 (GBDEGBD) again today, and for reasons unknown, it felt completely natural to me! I’m taking that as an omen :D
